Today, the 20th of April 2020, shall be and is memorable for a lot of reasons. Today is the death
anniversary of Shakeel Badayani, a great lyricist of the Indian cinema. Not just that, it is all the more memorable because the entire world is reeling under the epidemic of COVID-19 caused by the Corona Virus forcing us to stay indoors and maintain self-quarantine and social distancing. The morning dawned on me with a lot of uncertainties and worries of being in a corporate world and I casually woke up checking my phone as usual and there it was, the usual bayaar-e-seher from my Pitamah, Dutt Saab. I listened to it and promised that I would write on it by the EOD and as the clock strikes 11:11 p.m. I sit here to post this on my blog for posterity but all the more to share it with the world which might appreciate his insights; and so, here it is.
Dutt Saab, Ab mujhe mauka mila ye karne ko! Raat ke gyaarah baje, maafi chaahti hoon!!
Aayi hai mere pass tu is aan baan se, uthri ho jaise koi farishta (:-) aasmaan se, ye tha is bayaar-e-seher ki shuruwaad aaj jo mujhe lagne laga ek farishta aake gaa raha ho, aaj mera ajab haal tha. Pehla jo tasavvur mein chehra aana aur uspar jo bolne ka andaaz kya hi lajawaab, Dutt saab. Har baar ki tarah giraftaar hui main ek sureeli awaaz se aur phir aapki tehreer se. Aisa na laga ki itni puraani geet hai, kyunki peshkash aisa tha. Aapki bachpan aur jawaani ki baatein yoon humein sair pe le jaati hai ek alag hi hawaai jahaaz mein jo aaj kal band ho padaa hai. Tasavvur mein hum bhi udkar pahunch gaye Uttaranchal ki waadiyon mein aur leejiye saamne baith gaye. Aapki baatein Binaca Geetmala ke baare mein, roomaniyat Shakeel Badayuni Saab ki alfaaz mein, aapke tajurbe ek alag hi ehsaas hai, Dutt Saab. Shakeel Badayuni Saab ki paidaaish, unki jawaani, unki har baatein, unka mushaire mein jaana aur loot lena dilon ko, phir Mumbai mein jaana. Phir jo gaane ka zikr kiya aapne, Afsaana likh rahi hoon; baap re! Ye meri bachpan ki yaadein hain and one of my favorite songs jisko bahut gaati thi main. Shakeel Saab ke saare films, uski kaamyaabi aur phir Baiju Baawra ka zikr. Papa aur mera bahut hi pasandeeda film hai aur uske gaane aise bakamaal gaane, aur Man Tarpat gaane ka zikr, the most secular song made I would say as you see the highest amount of dedication and spirituality is qadar ki aaj bhi aankhen bhar aati hai. Phir woh gaana, "Do sitaaron ka zameen" bahut hi khoob. Ravi Saab ke saath ke gaane, Rafi Saab ki awaaz, Shakeel Badayuni Saab ka alfaaz, kya hi zabardast insaan. And then, Mughal-e-Azam, what a movie that was! Pyaar kiya toh darna kya a cult song in its time and I think to this day. Ek ek gaane ka zikr jo aapne kiya hai har ek gaana anmol, adbuth aur atulaya jaise aap kehte ho with all the three A's in place, Alfaaz, Ahsaas, aur Andaz on point. Romance has always been a great subject to write about for every poet, every writer, and every human being in this world albeit in different ways with different perceptions, koi zindagi se romance karta hai toh koi ek shaks se, koi paise aur duniyadaari se toh koi banjaargi se, falsafa alag alag, andaz hatke se. What a beautiful way of presenting your tribute to a great poet, Dutt Saab, a class of its own just like the seagull that chose to fly high and soar in the skies, Jonathan Livingston Seagull indeed. Aapka culture padhaane ki baatein along with your perspectives of what culture is and how different great personalities of our country have been and their contribution to all our lives and our history. Rabindranath Tagore ke khayaalat aur us-se hatkar soch Shakeel Saab ka, an amazing comparitive study indeed. Gyaan shabd par ek naya tippani, reinventing oneself, a transformation of sorts as though a silkworm that is a cocoon thinking it is going to die when it turns into the most beautiful butterfly taking flight to attract and entice a world of humans. Aapka favorite film Dilip Saab ka, Dil diya dard liya, your take on the movie was very interesting too. Aapke narrative ke beech aapka in khoobsoorat gaanon ko apni sureeli awaaz mein gungunaana is bayaar-e-seher ko dilchasp banaa deta hai, Dutt Saab. Aur itni khoobsoorat tasveeron ke saath ye narrative itna hi khaas ban jaata hai - Zindagi kitni khoobsoorat hai indeed. Shakeel Saab ka har ek mahaan gayak aur gayika ke saath kaam karna, unka background, har gaane ki ek khaasiyat, Lataji ka awaaz ka chale jaane, the story weaves into a labyrinth of sorts dragging us into a maze where we willingly get in to get lost. Premonitions are amazing occurrences indeed, Haalaat ke baare mein aapki baatein, sooni sadkein, diwaaron se apni baatein, yuddh ka zikr aur aaj ki haqeeqat - a biowarfare indeed. What a beautiful way, Professor Saab, you drew us all into a labyrinth got us hooked and arrested into the bayaar and then made sure we listen to your advice on protecting ourselves in this times of Covid-19 and social distancing - ASTONISHING, AMAZING, & ASTOUNDING sirjee along with your giving importance to all the wonder warriors who are fighting from the frontline spreading your positive thoughts and positive affirmations. Very nice of you Dutt Saab. Then came my all time favorite, Chaudavin ka Chaand ho! Uff, what an amazingly written piece of poetry this is, Papa bhi bahut zyaada pasand karte the is gaane ko. Waise toh chaand aapke ird-gird hi toh rehta hai aur aap uske. Amaavas kahaan hamari zindagi mein aayi hai Dutt Saab, aap humein chaandni raatein dikhaate jo rehte ho. Aapki zindagi ka tajurba aur zindagi bichadthe huye rishton ka naam, waah, Life is a mystery to be lived, not a problem to be solved indeed! As I always say, "We are born by chance, the choices we make define who we are!" Might as well make the right choices when we have just one life to live, hai na, Dutt Saab?! Mujhe zindagi ki duaa na de, another beautiful nazm. Aapki baaton pe tawajju dekhar us raaste pe chalne ki koshish zaroor kareinge. Sahi kehte ho aap Shaayar toh sabhi ke hotey hain. Deshon ki sarhadein, rishton ki sarhadein dono intense topics hain aur unke baare mein aapke tehreer bahut hi khoob. Ek shaam beemari ke baad jab ek sooraj doob gaya, and an end of a brilliant era, Shakeel Badayuni Saab no more. Ek bayaar-e-seher bahut hi khaas, Dutt Saab. Suhaani raat dhal chuki, naa jaane aap kab aaoge...Bangalore intezaar mein hai. Deedar ka zikr, Naushad saab ka sangeeth, Dilip Kumar saab, aur woh gaana, "Hue hum jinke liye barbaad" my childhood memories came back to me in one of the most beautiful forms as though a 75-mm movie reminding me of my wonderful Late mother and my late father. Shukriya Dutt Saab in saari khoobsoorat yaadon ko jagaane ke liye, keeping my promise to you, Bayaar pe bahaar ye raha aapke liye. The show must go on indeed and it will! Thank you is a very small phrase indeed for your contribution of richness to our lives!
